At CognateUK, our programmes form a three-phase roadmap that supports learners from their first steps into life sciences through to professional leadership. Every stage is enhanced by our AI-enabled learning technologies (ProfBots and CognateVerify™), ensuring personalised support and verified progress.
Phase 1: CognateHelix
A Specialist Life Sciences Enrichment Programme
CognateHelix is the first stage of the CognateUK learning roadmap. It works with A-level students, in the UK and internationally, to build the foundations for study and professional life in life sciences.
Equipping Tomorrow's Life Scientists for the Real World
Modern life sciences increasingly bring laboratory science and AI together. CognateHelix helps young people develop the scientific understanding, judgement and AI capability to learn and work confidently where the two meet.
The programme goes beyond teaching students how to use AI tools. It helps them evaluate evidence and make sound judgements when working with AI, knowing when to trust it, when to question it and when human judgement matters most.
These capabilities provide a strong foundation for university, apprenticeships and future careers across the life sciences.
CognateHelix is a specialist enrichment programme for students beginning in Year 12, designed to complement A-level study and running from October 2026 to December 2027.
Over the course of the programme, students work through five integrated modules and build a Signature Project Portfolio, applying machine learning to real biological data within one of three Grand Challenge themes: Healthy Ageing, Pandemic Prevention, or Net Zero.
Students learn to:
- •Move between experimental and computational approaches to scientific problems
- •Evaluate evidence and make sound judgements when working with AI and data-driven tools
- •Present and defend a sustained piece of work under structured questioning from the programme team and peers
- •Articulate cross-disciplinary scientific reasoning clearly in formal settings
We develop students who can think, question, and articulate, using real scientific problems as the medium.
Phase 2: Professional Upskilling

Equipping today's workforce with AI-era skills.
The second stage of our roadmap will focus on life sciences professionals. ProfBots will provide personalised coaching for mid-career learners, while CognateVerify™ will track professional growth and compliance in regulated industries.
